Are you a homeowner thinking about replacing your windows and doors before another Ontario winter? Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program pays $100 per window and door opening. The rules around it are specific, and the federal $5,000 grant that used to sit alongside it is now closed.

Here is what the program covers, what you get back, and the one step that has to happen before anything else.

What is the Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP)?

It is Ontario’s current home energy efficiency rebate, delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy with support from the provincial government. It pays homeowners back on upgrades that reduce how much energy a home uses. Windows and doors are on that list, along with insulation, air sealing, heat pump water heaters, heat pumps, solar panels, and smart thermostats.

The program launched in January 2025 and replaced the older federal grant most people were watching.

How much do you get back on windows and doors?

$100 per rough opening. A rough opening is the framed hole in your wall, not the number of sashes or panes. One casement window in one opening is one rebate. A bay window built into three separate openings counts as three.

The minimum to qualify. At least three window rough openings, or one door, or one skylight, or one sliding door rough opening. Every unit has to be an ENERGY STAR® certified model.

A home replacing 14 window openings plus a front door and a patio door is looking at 16 openings, which works out to $1,600 back.

Why replacing only your windows will not get you the rebate

Windows and doors sit in what the program calls the assessment stream. Two rules come with that, and they catch people out.

  • A registered energy advisor has to complete an initial home energy assessment on your home before any work starts. If you have already bought or installed your windows, you are not eligible for these rebates.
  • You have to complete at least two qualifying upgrades from the list the advisor recommends.

Here is the part most homeowners miss. Windows and doors together count as a single upgrade, no matter how many openings you replace. So your window project needs a partner. Attic insulation, basement wall insulation, and air sealing are the usual ones, and they pair well with new windows because they solve the same problem from a different angle.

Two other numbers are worth knowing. You get a $600 rebate to offset the cost of the initial and follow-up assessments, paid once you finish the program. And if you complete three qualifying upgrades instead of two, you receive an extra $500 bonus.

Does your home qualify?

You need to own the home, and it has to be a single detached or semi-detached house, a row house or townhome, or a mobile home on a permanent foundation.

On heating, you qualify one of two ways. Either you are an Enbridge Gas customer with an active account who heats primarily with a natural gas furnace or boiler, or your home is connected to Ontario’s electricity grid and you heat with electricity, propane, oil, or wood.

What order do you have to do this in?

  1. Book the assessment first. Fill out the form at homerenovationsavings.ca to get a list of approved service organizations near you, then contact one to schedule your initial home energy assessment. It takes about two hours.
  2. Get your report. The advisor gives your home an EnerGuide rating and a list of recommended upgrades.
  3. Choose at least two and have the work done. Windows have to be installed by a professional contractor.
  4. Book the follow-up assessment with the same advisor once the work is finished. That one takes about an hour.
  5. Receive your rebates. Within 30 days by Interac e-Transfer, or 60 days by cheque.

The order is not flexible. Step one has to come before you sign a contract or take delivery of anything.

What happened to the federal rebates?

The Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed to new applications, and the Canada Greener Homes Loan stopped accepting applications on October 1, 2025. If a quote you are looking at still shows a $5,000 federal grant as a line item, that quote is out of date.

The Home Renovation Savings Program is the broad rebate still paying on windows and doors in Ontario right now.

How much time do you actually have?

The program has been extended once already, and program administrators can change or end rebates based on funding availability. Widely reported timelines point to applications closing at the end of November 2026, though the program’s own pages do not currently publish a fixed date. Confirm the current deadline at homerenovationsavings.ca before you plan around it.

What matters more than the date is the runway. A full cycle runs an initial assessment, custom manufacturing, installation, and a follow-up assessment. Advisors and installers both book up through the fall, which is the same stretch when Ontario homeowners start noticing drafts. Starting the conversation in early autumn gives you room. Starting it in November does not.

Why this matters more in an Ontario winter

Windows, doors, and skylights account for up to 25% of the energy loss in a home, according to Natural Resources Canada. In London, Kitchener, Barrie, and everywhere else that goes through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, that loss is not evenly spread across the year. It concentrates in the months your furnace works hardest.

ENERGY STAR certified windows are about 20% more efficient than an average window, and certified doors about 15% more efficient. Every window and door we build is custom manufactured in our London, Ontario facility and installed by our own trained technicians. No subcontractors, ever. Every install is backed by our No Fine Print Warranty, which covers both the product and the installation for as long as you own your home, with no pro-rated terms.

We cannot file the rebate paperwork for you. Your registered energy advisor does that. What we can do is make sure the products going into your home are ENERGY STAR certified, and that your invoice carries the detail the program asks for.

If you are thinking about it for this year, the assessment is the first call, not the last one. Book a free in-home consultation and we will walk your openings with you.
